Our inaugural North East Life Sciences Barometer, conducted in partnership with Square One Law, gathers insights from over 30 companies, 90% of which are SMEs.
The findings reveal a sector on the rise:
- Strong financial performance: Most businesses reported stable or improved financial results.
- Innovation breakthroughs: Companies are securing funding, expanding into new markets, and progressing in clinical trials and patents.
- Challenges to address: Access to capital, lab space, and international competition remain hurdles.
Despite these challenges, the sector is optimistic. Nearly 75% of businesses expect growth next year, with a strong focus on US market expansion, revenue growth, and technological innovation.
To maintain momentum and strengthen the region’s global position, strategic action is needed:
- Enhancing investment: Attracting risk capital and fostering global investor relationships.
- Supporting US expansion: Providing resources for regulatory navigation and market entry.
- Building infrastructure: Expanding lab spaces, innovation hubs, and mentorship opportunities.
The North East is poised for continued success, but overcoming some key barriers will be critical to unlocking its full potential.
