Smart Manufacturing Data Hub Project

The Smart Manufacturing Data Hub (SMDH), part of Innovate UK’s Made Smarter programme, helps small and medium-sized manufacturers to become more competitive by leveraging the power of data. With funding from Innovate UK, SMDH has supported CPI’s Digital Lighthouse project, helping to accelerate the digital transformation of UK manufacturing.
CPI’s Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre has been designated a Lighthouse Centre by SMDH, in recognition of its leadership in data-driven innovation.
Through this project, CPI is paving the way for companies to modernise their data infrastructure, enabling faster, more compliant and more efficient pharmaceutical manufacturing. Digital transformation is essential to meeting the evolving demands of the pharma industry, and CPI is using its expertise to support companies navigate and accelerate this journey.
The pharmaceutical industry is embracing digital technologies to achieve Industry 4.0, aiming to enhance sustainability, productivity, and compliance. Despite significant interest and numerous technological solutions, manufacturing struggles to effectively connect tools to business needs, causing confusion and slowing adoption.
Quality data in pharma manufacturing is traditionally stored in static electronic batch records, making it difficult to efficiently identify issues. The facility’s Qualified Person Dashboard addresses this challenge by collecting and analysing quality data in real time, streamlining issue detection. However, current integrations remain fragile and sensitive to changes in manufacturing systems.
The project focuses on developing an industrial data platform that integrates data from sensors, deviations, production lines, and operator tasks. This cloud-based infrastructure facilitates data sharing across the industry. Additionally, dashboards provide quality insights and maintenance predictions, laying the foundation for AI-driven analytics to detect anomalies and improve decision-making.
CPI have delivered a best-practice infrastructure by:
• Implementing a cloud-based industrial data platform which collates data from across the facility and our manufacturing processes, making it readily available for internal use and visualisation, and providing the capability for external data sharing.
• Delivering a demonstrator of our industrial data platform in use, focussed on the pharmaceutical and life science sector but widely applicable to all process manufacturing.
• CPI’s Lighthouse project is also aligned with the objectives of our Digital Membership programme. To determine how collaborative innovation can drive our pace in this area we will focus on driving standards (across data and systems) and robust implementation of new technology in both greenfield and brownfield sites, along with how we best share data in a secure way to drive process-prediction and sustainability outcomes.
• Working with leading technology providers, including Atos, to create a hub of digital data collected from the project [link to microsite]
• Interactive dashboard implementation. Gaining real-time insights into production, quality, and maintenance with our AI-powered dashboard. Detect anomalies, prevent downtime, and ensure compliance — all in one place.
In our Digital Membership we’re uniting our pharma, technology and delivery partners to standardise and, through effective use of data and systems connectivity, expedite the uptake of smart, connected technologies such as machine learning, AI, and robotics.
By adopting digital technologies, we empower SMEs and large pharma companies to embrace Industry 4.0 in a compliant manner.
