ReSCiD Project

Every year, the healthcare industry produces approximately 2.5 billion disposable injection devices, contributing to a total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) equivalent of 750,000 tCO₂e . Currently, there are no viable alternatives to single-use injectors — until now.
ReSCiD (Remanufacturing for a Sustainable Future in Combination Injection Devices) is collaboration pioneering a circular economy approach, introducing remanufacturable devices to reduce emissions by at least 95% while maintaining safety, quality, and performance.
The pharmaceutical and medical device industries rely heavily on disposable plastic-based injection devices, creating an urgent sustainability challenge. Existing solutions focus on recycling, but true impact comes from remanufacturing and reuse.
ReSCiD aims to transform the industry by:
• Developing innovative processes for the return, disassembly, refurbishment, and reintegration of used devices.
• Establishing a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-compliant decontamination and supply chain framework.
• Reducing reliance on raw materials, lowering production energy demands, and minimising waste.
By rethinking device life cycles, we are creating a practical and scalable alternative to single-use injectors.
Creating a remanufacturing model requires expertise across multiple disciplines. ReSCiD is bringing together key industry players to establish a comprehensive ecosystem that ensures sustainability, safety, and efficiency.
We are seeking partners with knowledge in:
• Pharmaceutical drug distribution
• Primary container and autoinjector design
• Clinical applications and healthcare partnerships
• Sustainable material innovation (e.g., bio-based plastics, polymers)
• Reverse logistics for collection and sorting
• Cleaning, decontamination, and regulatory compliance
• Component tracking and lifecycle analytics
By leveraging expertise in these areas, ReSCiD will redefine the standard for medical device sustainability.
ReSCiD is a joint initiative led by Owen Mumford in collaboration with CPI. This project is funded by Innovate UK, supporting the drive towards net-zero healthcare solutions.
We are shaping the future of sustainable medical devices. Whether you are a pharmaceutical company, medical device manufacturer, healthcare provider, or sustainability expert, your expertise can help make this vision a reality.
We are building the consortium during the first half of 2025 and will be looking to start the project in 2025.
