Professor Mike Shipman, renowned chemist and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Durham University, joins CPI as Non-Executive Director
27 Mar 2025
CPI appoints the chemistry Professor to its Board of Directors.
Professor Mike Shipman brings a wealth of experience in both chemistry research and academic leadership to the CPI Board.
Over his distinguished career, he has published over 100 research papers and held roles at several prestigious UK universities, including Exeter and Warwick. He has been Deputy Vice Chancellor of Durham University since 2023.
Throughout that time, Mike has specialised in organic chemistry, with a particular emphasis on small carbon-based molecules including natural products and their applications in biology and medicinal chemistry. His work has involved collaborating extensively with scientists across disciplines, as well as with both large and small pharmaceutical companies.
Mike’s current role as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Durham University, meanwhile, provides him with extensive insights into academic funding and the broader research and innovation landscape in the UK. He will apply this knowledge and experience to help CPI enhance its role in bringing academia and industry together, transforming innovative ideas into economic growth.
In his role as Non-Executive Director, Mike is keen to help CPI support the innovation ecosystem in the UK as it responds to the pressing climate and environmental challenges facing the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and help it embrace new technologies such as AI as they impact the way scientific discoveries are made. He will also sit on CPI’s Audit Committee, providing strategic guidance and oversight.
Commenting on his appointment, Mike Shipman said:
“I’ve known about CPI for many years so it’s incredibly exciting to join the team. CPI is excellent at bridging the gap between our outstanding universities in the UK, and the businesses and industries that have the skills and expertise to turn ideas into products that make a meaningful impact. I look forward to helping CPI to navigate the opportunities and challenges facing the innovation landscape in the UK.”
Frank Millar, CEO of CPI, said:
“Mike Shipman’s considerable expertise and understanding of the broader research and innovation ecosystem make him an invaluable addition to the CPI Board. He will help CPI build and deepen relationships between industry and academia, particularly in the North East of England, which will be instrumental as we continue to support the UK’s economic growth and tackle global challenges.”
Jennie Younger, Chair of CPI’s Board, said:
“Professor Shipman is a fantastic addition to our Board. CPI has a long-standing relationship with Durham University, and we are delighted to strengthen that with his appointment.
