Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI has an exciting opportunity for a placement student: product design (mechanical) to join the established and growing product design team on a fixed term basis for a period of 12-months. Candidates should show an interest in a wide variety of subjects such as medical innovations, additive manufacture and user-centred design, and a passion to learn new things. The role of the placement student is to assist the design, development, prototyping and testing of products and processes for a wide range of applications, especially in medical technologies, Healthcare and Life Sciences markets. The placement student will be working across a very wide range of projects and will work directly with a variety of other engineers and scientists such as product designers, electronics engineers, material scientists, physicists, biochemists etc.

The Role

Typical activities will include:

  • Assisting team members with research, design, prototyping and testing of electro-mechanical devices.
  • Becoming an expert on various forms of additive manufacturing including the design, operation, and maintenance of such systems.
  • Gaining an in depth understanding of the product development process and the key aspects involved in developing highly regulated products such as medical devices.
  • Developing new and innovative manufacturing processes or demonstration devices to allow CPI to expand it’s offering to new and existing clients.

The person we are seeking

The ideal candidate will be studying towards an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product or Industrial Design or a related field. They should have some knowledge and practical experience of design, development, and manufacture of mechanical devices and:

  • Experience in using 3D CAD software and rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing. 
  • An interest in the field of medical devices and technologies and;
  • Some knowledge and experience in designing products that contain electronics.

This position would suit students whose course includes a sandwich year in industry, or those able to take a placement opportunity in industry between academic years.
